Tips to updating your home for the holidays

It is that time of year again! It is time to dress up your home for the holidays. For me, this means organizing and cleaning out the kids rooms and my room and trying to get everything organized so that Santa can deliver his annual sleigh-load of toys and gifts. We are quite a lucky bunch around here so I hate to complain about all of the work that it takes to get the house back together after my good friend Santa comes to visit. Part of the joy in the holidays is getting the house prepared for a big celebration and for family gatherings. Seeing the excitement and wonder on a child's face when it comes time for the holidays is just so endearing and a great deal of fun. It truly makes the season for me. This year we will be decorating and I thought it might be handy to share some of the tips that we follow around our home in getting the house ready for the holiday season.

1. Updates abound. From hanging holiday colored sheer window curtains to updating the candle scents in our home to reflect the season, there is much attention to detail that takes place when we decorate. The first thing that I do to make sure that my head is in the game is to clean the house from top to bottom. This helps me keep the house clean throughout the holiday season as well. Then I begin making a plan to decorate.

2. Clear the house. I wait until the husband and the littles are out of the house for the day and I will decorate. I will of course leave some things for them to assist with but for the most part, the decorating gets done at a minimum when it is just the hubs and I.

3. Update the linens. While we don't have Christmas sheets, yet, we do have tablecloths and bathroom linens that get changed out.

4. Hang up the lights. We hang up lights inside and outside so we try to do this on a warm day.

5. Prep for elf on the shelf. Oh this is my favorite holiday tradition! Do you have an elf on the shelf? When does he or she come to visit?
