Why I Love Uncommon Goods

Crafting has always been one of my favorite hobbies. Over the past year or so, I have been busy with other areas of my life such as taking classes, rebuilding my life post-divorce, and managing day-to-day life. Sitting down to craft is something that I have missed doing dearly and I have been putting more focus on making time for myself to do things that I enjoy such as cross-stitching or being creative.

For my birthday in July I asked my dad for a gift card to JoAnn Fabrics so that I could sign up for a quilting class or cake baking class. I have yet to sign up for a course, but this is on my to-do list!

I have started to cross-stitch an adorable memento, as seen below, to commemorate this time in my life. After completion, I plan to hang in my house on my family wall or somewhere that will make me smile when remembering to enjoy the journey that I am on!

my current project

Recently, a catalog arrived in the mail from UncommonGoods. I typically toss catalogs into the recycle bin instantly but this catalog struck me as different and I was immediately intrigued by the description of “handmade, organic, and unique items” and the idea of being responsible and sustainable in all business efforts. At first I was a bit confused as to how a company could state these claims when sending out a mail order catalog but as I began to look closer, I learned that the company uses 30% post-consumer recycled waste or paper from FSC certified forests to make the catalogs.

The cover of the catalog intrigued me enough to open it and view the contents. I was delighted to find unique, handmade, organic items that a consumer cannot find at your local Target or big box store.

I was even more pleased to see truly creative craft ideas for kids and adults, one-of- a- kind gifts for anyone in my family, and even silly items that I never knew existed!
